FINDING INNER PEACE
“Who in the world am I? Ah that’s a great puzzle” – LEWIS CARROLL and I will like to utilize the word of Aristotle; “Knowing yourself is the beginning of wisdom”. Many people walk around with an informed identity (They were told who they are). They run their lives based on what the society says. The nature versus nurture debate is one of the oldest issues in psychology. The debate centers on the relative contributions of genetic inheritance and environmental factors to human development.
- Nature refers to all of the genes and hereditary factors that influence who we are—from our physical appearance to our personality characteristics.
- Nurture refers to all the environmental variables that impact who we are, including our early childhood experiences, how we were raised, our social relationships, and our surrounding culture.
Well-known thinkers such as John Locke believed in what is known as tabula rasa, which suggests that the mind begins as a blank slate. According to this notion, everything that we are and all of our knowledge is determined by our experience.
Empiricists take the position that all or most behaviors and characteristics result from learning. Behaviorism is a good example of a theory rooted in empiricism. The behaviorists believe that all actions and behaviors are the results of conditioning. Theorists such as John B. Watson believed that people could be trained to do and become anything, regardless of their genetic background.
Take a pause and consider your life for once, your principles, your goal, your pursuit, your attitude, your faith, choice of beverages, choice of food and in fact choice of association takes root in the values instill in you by your parent. You do things because you’ve seen your parent do the same time without numbers. Who raised you and where you were raised has a way of influencing what you’ll eventually grow to be.
Living your entire life this way will land you in position where you will be experiencing inner conflict. Inner peace is located in the true definition of oneself. Locate yourself today and enjoy inner peace.
